Description

In December 2006, Congress repealed the 144-year old law that prohibited attorneys from charging a fee for representing veterans in VA benefits claims. The new law, the Veterans Benefits, Health Care, and Information Technology Act of 2006 (Section 101 of Public Law 109-461), took effect on June 20, 2007, and allows attorneys to charge reasonable fees to represent veterans.

Expand your successful social security disability, elder law, workers’ compensation or employee benefits practice to include this exciting and important new area of the law, while helping veterans obtain crucial benefits that they have earned, and that they deserve.

The National Veterans Legal Services Program (NVLSP) and LexisNexis are proud to provide you with a comprehensive training resource and a complete package of practice tools for your veterans benefits practice.

Filmed before a live audience in high quality digital format, Veterans Benefits Advocacy provides an introduction to, and comprehensive training on, this complex new area of the law. Presented by Ron Abrams and Bart Stichman, co-directors of NVLSP, and the country’s premier veterans benefits attorneys, this 6 hour DVD offers legal, administrative, and practical guidance on why and how attorneys can consider expanding their practice to represent veterans before the VA. It also covers the criteria for entitlement to VA disability benefits and the governing rules of practice and procedure.

Topics and Highlights include:
  • The Entitlement Criteria for Service- Connected Disability Compensation
  • The Criteria for Assignment of the Appropriate Disability Rating
  • Continuation of Disability Ratings
  • The VA Adjudication Process for an Original Claim for Disability Benefits
  • Methods for Obtaining Disability Compensation Even After a Final VA Denial
  • Judicial Review of a Final VA Decision Denying a Claim
  • The New Rules Governing Attorneys Fees
  • General Advocacy Tips for Attorneys in Practicing Before the VA
  • Obtaining and Interpreting the Documents in a VA Claims File
